About us

Newbury Volleyball Club have run a successful junior development section for over a year now. From complete beginners, these players have learned the skills of volleyball and have formed an important part of the club's BVA Development League team. Thanks to an "Awards for All" grant, and a "Local Network" grant we are now expanding the junior development program, and starting separate junior training sessions at St Gabriel's School, Newbury on Friday evenings.

Scouts Try Out Volleyball

To help promote the club we sent out an offer of taster sessions to the various scout groups in Newbury. On Thursday 13th March, 24 members from The Newbury 2nd group turned up for a training session. They were aged between 9 and 11 years and all beginners to volleyball. Leah and I coached the group. We used the full training net which extends across the whole length of the hall making 4 smaller badminton size courts. We warmed them up in 2 groups alongside each other using different drills and skills. By the end of the hour we had eight teams playing 3 v 3 catch and throw volleyball at the same time.

Good Friday I was invited over to the Hungerford scout group. I was surprised to only have 6 players and a small hut with a very low roof. On our coaching courses you really know the meaning of improvisation. The warm up was fairly easy rolling the ball and chasing it. The volley height was rather stunted so we did a bit of sitting volleyball. I used my elastic web band as a net tied to the bars of the window one side and the scout flag pole the other.  At the end of the evening even the scout masters had joined in a friendly 3 v3 match.

The club has been invited to take part in the Scouts St. George’s Celebration Day on Sunday 27th April this will involve about 200 children aged 6 years to 18 years. The event will be held in the field next to the 3rd Newbury Scout Hut (near to the Shaw Social Club) We need some volunteers to help apparently there will be free burgers!!

My daughter Poppy who is 10, joined Newbury Volleyball Club a year ago and loves it. Volleyball has given her great enjoyment and confidence and the Tuesday and Friday sessions are a highlight of her week. The training is professional and fun and there is a great team spirit. The coaches are welcoming and encouraging and Poppy recently had the wonderful opportunity of the extra tuition from a GB team member. Thank-you to all who give up their time.

“Joining the Newbury VC Junior Club has significantly improved my son’s confidence & drive to succeed; we wouldn’t be able to participate in this programme, but for the financial support provided by the National Body. The coaching & general organisation is excellent."

"It is very apparent that over the last year the junior team under your guidance and tutelage has gone from strength to strength. Traditionally the junior element of the club has been children of club members who we tried, not always successfully, to incorporate into the adult players’ game. We now have a keen and able group of juniors, some of whom wish to play in a team, others who wish to play volleyball for fun that is unrecognisable from two years ago. Thanks for all your efforts."

A welcoming, well-run Club with dedicated and friendly volunteers. My daughter has enjoyed the training and matches - especially the recent trip to train with the GB ladies team at Weymouth - an experience she would not have had through any of her Sports activities at School. She has been inspired to aim for the Olympic team - what more could you wish a Club to achieve for your daughter?!

My son has had a brilliant year playing volleyball at the Newbury Club and the wide and varied training sessions are letting him develop not only as a sportsman, but as an individual. It is a great focus to his week, and when all we hear on the news is about underactive, unfit teenagers, it is so refreshing to see a club so dedicated to sporting acheivements and fun.
