Volleyball England "Club of the year" 2006-2007, Runner Up '07-'08, Runner up '08-'09
We are a friendly multinational
volleyball club based in Newbury,
West Berkshire. We were the first
club in the country to be accredited
with Volley3, the top club mark in
our sport. We have been awarded
‘Volleyball Club of the Year’ by
Volleyball England and twice been
runners up.

We run a Volleyball Academy for
young players, in conjunction with
West Berkshire Schools Sports
Partnership.

Our eleven local secondary schools
are visited in rotation by our junior
coach, for beginner training.
Academy players can then join
training within the club 7.15-8.30pm
Tuesdays and 7-9pm Fridays, for
the more advanced juniors

Adult players train on club night,
Tuesdays 8.00pm-10.30pm. Team
squads also train Thursdays
7-30-10.30pm.

We enter women’s, men’s and
mixed sides in the local BVA
league. Juniors play in the BVA
Development league.

We also run a men’s National
League side who train Tuesdays
8-10pm during the season. Our
director of coaching is FIVB 2
accredited. We have a number of
other internationally experienced
coaches. We encourage all players
to qualify as coaches and referees,
to maximise their understanding of
the game and cascade training. All
junior coaches are CRB checked.

During the summer we play outdoor
tournaments, and the weather
permitting, "volley in the park" on
Sundays, in Victoria Park,
Newbury.

All new members are welcome and
the first two sessions are free.
Whatever the level of your
experience, come and join us. We
were all beginners once.

Please enjoy our website and join
us this week!

See you on court!

Newbury U12 Team: Harry Keeves (C), Alex, and Joseph

Date: 17th July 2010

We had a great tournament at Sandbanks which is a fabulous beach with great views. The
event was really well organised with good facilities including a live band, BBQ, Bar and a
central tent. The weather was warm and sunny with a westerly breeze (more like a hurricane
at times). After an initial scare (we were not on the fixtures sheet but this was quickly sorted)
we setup camp and Sue explained the rules and how the tournament was going to work.

We played 6 league matches, starting off slowly but picked up nicely winning 3. When we
were not playing we referred some of the other matches. This was really good experience and
a great way to learn the rules of beach volleyball and appreciate the pressure referees are
sometimes under.

The final game of 3 sets was for 3rd place. We had to play a team who had narrowly beaten
us in the league stage. We won the first set comfortably and then lost the second set. The
heat was on as the sun beat down and the wind howled, we scrapped the sand out of our
eyes and through gritted teeth we won the 3rd set to win the match and secure 3rd place for
Newbury.

I would like to thank my team mates, Alex for his really good serves and the commitment he
showed and Joseph for some great over-arm serves and some crucial digs.

Most of all I would like to thank, on behalf of the team, Sue for her great coaching and
encouragement not just on the day but throughout the whole year.

We are all really looking forward to next year’s tournament at Sandbanks.

Harry Keeves

and here is the U14s match report:

Under 14's sandbanks volleyball

On 18th July four very keen and talented young volleyballers played at Sandbanks in the
under 14's boys division 2. The team consisted of Matthew Stent, Elisa Hill, Rory
Craven-Todd and Harry Kanisius Pocock.

In our group there were many good teams and the wind was starting up although we got off to
a good start in our first match and we worked well as a team, we then went on to winning
three out of our first four matches.

Being at Sandbanks we all got to look at the more advanced volleyballers and refereed other
matches, the weather was lovely for beach volleyball and we were playing the teams a
second time. The wind was getting stronger but our serves were better and we still worked
well as a team but the teams we played previously played better.

Overall we had won five matches out of eight which put us in 3rd place in the under 14 mixed,
we then had to play the under 14 boys div 2 final. The team we had to play we played
previously so we knew what we were up against, the final was a close match and the first set
went to the opponents. We still kept our heads high and came back with wonderful shots and
great serving and then won the second set going into the decider. The wind picked up and
both teams played well and it was level until the opponents got ahead and our team narrowly
missed out on 1st place and took 2nd place. At the end of the day we had learnt more about
volleyball, had a great day out and had lots of fun.

Newbury Volleyball Club is actively looking for sponsorship!
We are a dynamic committed club who were Volleyball Club of the Year in 2007, runners up
in the CCPR National Sports Club awards and are in the top finalists for 2008. We are
regularly taking free volleyball taster sessions out into the community with various youth and
adult groups. We need help no matter how small from a sponsored match ball to suitable
venue hire.

Any groups who would like to take part in one of our taster sessions, or would like to sponsor
the club, please contact Sue on su.sayers@tiscali.co.uk
